The frame of your outdoor furniture may last 20 years, but the fabric will define the guest experience — and be the first component to show wear. Choosing the right outdoor fabric is perhaps the most consequential specification decision for hospitality buyers. This guide explains the four main outdoor fabric types and their commercial applications.
1. Solution-Dyed Acrylic (e.g., Sunbrella)The industry gold standard. Solution-dyed means the colour pigment is added to the liquid acrylic before the fibre is extruded — the colour goes all the way through, like a carrot, not just on the surface like a radish.
- UV/Fade Resistance: ★★★★★ — 5+ years of direct sun exposure with minimal fading.
- Water Resistance: ★★★★☆ — Water-repellent finish; dries quickly.
- Stain Resistance: ★★★★★ — Bleach-cleanable (yes, you can use diluted bleach).
- Mould/Mildew Resistance: ★★★★★ — The acrylic fibre itself does not support mould growth.
- Cost: Premium (€40-€80 per metre for upholstery weight).
- Best for: Luxury hotels, resorts, yachts, any high-end outdoor application.
At KCK.Outdoor, we offer Sunbrella fabrics across our entire product range, with custom colour matching available for large orders.
2. Solution-Dyed Olefin (Polypropylene)A cost-effective alternative to solution-dyed acrylic. Similar technology — colour is embedded in the fibre — but at a lower price point.
- UV/Fade Resistance: ★★★★☆ — Good sun resistance; may show slight fading after 3-4 years.
- Water Resistance: ★★★★☆ — Naturally hydrophobic; dries very quickly.
- Stain Resistance: ★★★★☆ — Most stains clean with mild soap; not bleach-cleanable.
- Mould/Mildew Resistance: ★★★★☆ — Resistant but not immune in persistently damp conditions.
- Cost: Mid-range (€15-€30 per metre).
- Best for: Mid-market hotels, casual restaurants, residential projects.
The economy option. Unlike solution-dyed fabrics, the colour is applied to the finished fibre surface — like painting a wall rather than colouring the plaster.
- UV/Fade Resistance: ★★☆☆☆ — Noticeable fading within 12-18 months of direct sun.
- Water Resistance: ★★★☆☆ — Requires periodic re-treatment with waterproofing spray.
- Stain Resistance: ★★★☆☆ — Stains can be difficult to remove; harsher cleaning methods may strip colour.
- Cost: Budget (€8-€15 per metre).
- Best for: Seasonal use, covered areas, short-term installations.
- Not recommended for: Permanent outdoor hospitality installations.
Commonly used for sling-style chairs where a single piece of tensioned fabric forms the seat and back. Not used for cushions.
- UV Resistance: ★★★★☆ — Excellent when UV-stabilised.
- Strength: ★★★★★ — Extremely high tensile strength; supports significant weight.
- Comfort: ★★★☆☆ — Less comfortable than cushioned seating for extended sitting.
- Maintenance: ★★★★★ — Simply wipe clean; no cushion storage needed.
- Best for: Poolside, high-turnover dining, areas where cushions would be impractical.
When specifying fabrics for a hospitality project, ask these questions:
- What is the contract-grade warranty on this fabric? (Minimum 3 years for commercial use.)
- Is the fabric solution-dyed or piece-dyed? (Solution-dyed always for outdoor use.)
- What are the cleaning instructions? (Hospitality operations need simple, non-specialist cleaning.)
- What is the Wyzenbeek abrasion rating? (Minimum 15,000 double rubs for commercial seating.)
- Does the fabric meet local fire codes? (Request test certificates.)
- Is colour consistency guaranteed across production batches? (Important for phased projects.)
